What is a Milanesa

Milanesa is a popular dish in Latin American cuisine, particularly in Argentina, Uruguay, Mexico, and Brazil. It consists of thin slices of beef, chicken, or pork that are breaded and fried until golden and crispy. The process is similar to making a schnitzel, but with unique regional twists.

Ingredients:

  • 4 thin beef steaks (sirloin or top round works well)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • Oil for frying (vegetable or canola oil)

Instructions:

  1. Season the steaks with salt and pepper on both sides.
  2. In one bowl, mix the flour with a pinch of salt and pepper. In another bowl, beat the eggs. In a third bowl, combine the breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, garlic powder, and paprika.
  3. Dredge each steak in the flour, shaking off any excess. Dip them in the beaten eggs, then coat with the breadcrumb mixture, pressing lightly to ensure the crumbs stick.
  4.  In a large skillet, heat enough oil to cover the bottom over medium-high heat.
  5. Fry the breaded steaks for about 2-3 minutes on each side, until golden brown and cooked through. Avoid overcrowding the pan—work in batches if necessary.
  6. Remove the steaks from the skillet and drain on paper towels. Serve hot with lemon wedges, a side salad, or your favorite dipping sauce.
